How to write about africa5/22/2023 Africa is big: fifty-four countries, 900 million people who are too busy starving and dying and warring and emigrating to read your book. Don’t get bogged down with precise descriptions. Or it is hot and steamy with very short people who eat primates. It is hot and dusty with rolling grasslands and huge herds of animals and tall, thin people who are starving. In your text, treat Africa as if it were one country. If you must include an African, make sure you get one in Masai or Zulu or Dogon dress. An AK-47, prominent ribs, naked breasts: use these. Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel Prize. Note that ‘People’ means Africans who are not black, while ‘The People’ means black Africans. Also useful are words such as ‘Guerrillas’, ‘Timeless’, ‘Primordial’ and ‘Tribal’. Subtitles may include the words ‘Zanzibar’, ‘Masai’, ‘Zulu’, ‘Zambezi’, ‘Congo’, ‘Nile’, ‘Big’, ‘Sky’, ‘Shadow’, ‘Drum’, ‘Sun’ or ‘Bygone’. Kenyan literary critic Binyavanga Wainaina offers some handy tips for all would-be saviours of Africa.Īlways use the word ‘Africa’ or ‘Darkness’ or ‘Safari’ in your title.

The Game by Vi Keeland5/21/2023 But you know what they say about things that are wrong.sometimes they feel so right. It would be wrong, wouldn't it? Probably. But there was no way I was getting involved when I was now his boss, even if he was insanely gorgeous and had the dirtiest mouth I'd ever come across. Only lately the only woman he seemed to want was me. Christian Knox was too handsome and confident for his own good and could have any woman he wanted. Next thing I knew, I was learning a sport I knew nothing about by spending time with the team's quarterback who was out with an injury, a man who my formula would definitely determine was all wrong for me. That something turned out to be part ownership in a professional football team. Apparently, a father I never knew existed had left me something in his will. But then a man knocked on my door and handed me some papers that turned my life upside down. I spent twelve hours writing algorithms for one of the largest companies in the world and then came home to work on a pet project of mine-feeding facts about the men I knew into a formula to find my perfect match before my twenties came barreling to a close. Tina fey second city5/21/2023 A return to television with the quirky comedy "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (Netflix 2015- ) and a big-screen reunion with Poehler in the comedy "Sisters" (2015) continued her string of appealing projects. A return to "SNL" in 2008 with a dead-on caricature of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin became one of the most talked-about sketches in the show's history. While the show racked up numerous awards, Fey continued working in features, appearing opposite Poehler in "Baby Mama" (2007) and Steve Carell in "Date Night" (2010). Despite a constant battle for ratings, "30 Rock" became a media darling and a multi-award winner, thanks to Fey's sharp dialogue and easy rapport with co-star Alec Baldwin. After proving her mettle as big-screen scribe of the hit Lindsay Lohan flick "Mean Girls" (2004), Fey left the "SNL" nest to write and star on the award-winning sitcom "30 Rock" (NBC, 2006-2013). A popular crush among political junkies, cultural literates and highbrow frat boys across America, this self-described "super-nerd" first came onto the scene as a writer and cast member of "Saturday Night Live" (NBC, 1975- ) where she sparkled brightly as the sarcastic Weekend Update co-anchor to Jimmy Fallon, and later, Amy Poehler. An alumni of Chicago's famed Second City improv troupe, fashionably bespectacled writer-comedienne Tina Fey proved that a brainy woman could be sexy. |
